2.0 I talked with some of my new colleagues! Which is nice in 2 ways: I got some tips about starting off with my research and made myself acquainted.. :) I will be joining a project called LiLa (Library of Labs).. a kind of open lab environment. Students can do virtual and real experiments online. We will be designing the pedagogical and design guidelines, and evaluate the usefulness of the environment (~ 4m€). Another project I am involved in is designing and building an online learning and collaboration platform for the Medical Delta. I had some fruitful discussions about the projects today, but will take it easy this week (next week I'll be going on vacation in Portugal). As we say in the Netherlands, a good start brings you halfway.. :) 0

2.0 It took some more sweat to get out those statements, but I’m rather happy with the final list. And given some current developments over here in the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Netherlands</st1:country-region></st1:place> it seems my statements are totally “to date” in some weeks from now (keep following media for the creationism debate and the privatization of the public health sector debate). Next weeks I have some appointments with the Beadle and the chairman of the committee (Beunderman) to discuss the day itself. I think I will attend some defences in the week prior to my own, to get down the nerves a bit. And on Monday March 9 it’s my turn.So, I wish to invite you all to attend the defence. I start at 12.00h with the ‘lekenpraatje’. Then at 12.30h the Beadle gets in and the show really kicks off. At 13.30 it should be over. 2.0 I once more managed to take the next step in the process: my ‘promotoren’ have accepted the changes I made to the manuscript based on the Examination Committee members’ comments – you know, those “advisory only” comments. In the end it took quite some time, but I think the piece has improved. The next step is the statements that go with the thesis. I handed in a set, but those were judged as “not worthy to my thesis”. I don’t know if that’s a compliment or not… It nevertheless means I’ve got to come up with some new ones. And trust me, once you have to make up those statements you suddenly start philosophizing about the difference between a statement, an opinion, and an observation… It could be a nice topic for a discussion. 1

<a href="http://creativecommons.org">Creative Commons</a> is a great non-profit enterprise by Stanford Law professor Lawrence Lessig and others. Because sharing information is entirely different in the digital age (hey, copying is free!) than previously, it tries to accomodate easy sharing and using of information by allowing consumers and producers of information to clearly read or indicate the license by which the information is protected. Innovation is remixing information, and information should be freely available in order to spur innovation. The discussion about open source, copyleft, and mroe, has been overshadowed by law suits against teenagers sharing music or movies online, by tighter copyright policies in Europe and the US. The CC initiative therefore is great, and offers an alternative for people to either not licensing their content (meaning that you remain full copyright, unlike earlier), or selling rights to industry, who will sit on it and not allow information to flow freely, as it should. There are though, some problems with Creative Commons. David Wiley, an expert in learning objects, open education, open content, and openness in general, has been pointing these out the previous years quite clearly. Have a look at <a href="http://opencontent.org/blog/archives/697">this post</a>, to get a quick understanding of what it all means. It is well-written, and links to several other discussions online. Some quotes below; About SA It is important to note that any license that includes the “Share Alike” restriction is likely to raise compatibility problems. The “Share Alike” condition requires that adaptations based on resources under a “Share Alike” license also be licensed under essentially the same license. This often cannot be done…. About NC In every technical sense, the NC clause as currently constituted is a disaster. Worse, it is a popular placebo. People think it is protecting their works from what they imagine “commercial use” to mean, but in point of fact there is no way of knowing whether a court would agree with their interpretation, and there is no canonical interpretation to fall back on. I’ve never been one to criticize NC on the grounds that it is inherently evil (as others have), but how can we recommend the NC clause when no one - including the license’s authors - know what protection it provides? ... Second, I have never understood (and I really, deeply, sincerely do want to understand) Stephen’s line of argument describing how OERs licensed with, say, the CC By-SA license (lacking the NC clause), can be cordoned off by for-profit interests. 0

2.0 The suggestions concern problems PhD's encounter, especially in their first 2 years. The first suggestion is to include a "Courses" functionality. With it, you can (similar to "Events") <ul><li>add a course (like PROM-1)</li><li>describe what it is, the location, intended audience, website, etc. </li><li>indicate that you have done the course ("See who has done this course!")</li><li>rate, review/comment, and tag the course</li></ul>Please comment below whether or not you like this proposed functionality. If you have any suggestions don't hesitate to mention it as well! Secondly, supervision can be a huge hassle or giant bliss. Finding the right person, knowing his/her habits, discussing a supervisor with others who had the same supervisor can be very useful. I was thinking of adding the name of your supervisor to your profile. Hence, it will be possible to see who else has, or had the same supervisor. Doing that also links tags to the supervisor, making him/her more easily found. A forum or room about PhD problems will accomodate discussions about problems with supervision. "Sometimes it is already good to know that you are not the only one having these kinds of problems". The third suggestion concerns attracting senior researchers or other experts to the platform for an AskAnExpert functionality or Q&A. They have a special role, and are not actively participating. Initially, they will need to make a profile, possibly adding some documents or list of publications, tags, and that's it. PhD students can formulate a question, and tag this question, and automatically a list of relating Q&A's are shown, and a list of relevant experts. They can pick one or more experts, and ask the question to them, which is then sent to them by email. Preferrably, the expert is also able to answer through email, which is automatically included in the website. This might evolve in a good resource with lots of Q&A's en discussions. The 4th one. As I mentioned before, I wanted to make adding publications easy, or embed the METIS functionality. Since METIS is not always working, or does not include all reports, it could be useful to add publications manually to your profile... what do you think? The final suggestion concerns the findability of researchers in the Netherlands. This will be a more longer term thing, but hopefully, the platform will be scaled up. With more researchers in the network, it will be easier to find people who share the same research interests. 4

1.0 In total I got six questions / suggestions to revise the final work, but all are advisory only. The hint of the Committee of course is: CHANGE THOSE THINGS!!! So I will... <div> </div><div>The best thing to do is to follow that evergreen Chinese wisdom: be like the bamboo in the wind – just give in a bit to it, and once it’s gone you can stand upright again. It helped me out pretty good the last years. I think that is one of the things I really learned during the process: not fighting comments from the start, but listening and trying to solve things in a way that makes everyone happy. It might be in our Dutch culture - "polderen" is the word for it. </div><div>It thus seems I have to re-read the manuscript for the last time, make some necessary changes, blend these into the story, and send out the book to the printer. Not much of an exiting story. </div> 1

Second of all, we will keep on improving the portal; next are the Event functionality, notification, and some interface issues. More, we can include different user types (PhD, Alumnus, Industry expert, TU Delft Policy member, etc.), so the non-PhD's can have a place on the portal as well, or at least identified as such. What I want you to react upon, is the following. We can include "supertags", which are labels that we can assign to content objects, such as posts, documents, events, and albums. You can think of these tags as categories or general issues. I would really like you to give me suggestions about this:"What are the most important issues here?" The same as I have in mind? In another post, treating startups, as PEERS (the company I work for), the relevancy and importance of the job is explained as follows; It's a complicated job, but one that can help bring cohesiveness to the life of a company. "Any opportunity to interact with the community forces one to think about the product/feature considerations and ramifications of one choice over another," says Nagaraju Bandaru of SmartWebBlog. "In many ways, community manager is the evangelist for company's products and the voice of the customer in internal discussions. It's critical to react to online discussions with skill, consistency and aptitude; The role is hard to understand from outside but impossible to miss once a startup is in execution mode." 2.0 And another step taken: I sent the thesis manuscripts to the members of my Doctoral Exam Committee today. Almost all of ‘m have agreed on being a member of that committee and can be present at the defense – which is handy, of course. We are still waiting for the final Professor to agree and then I can officially book that wanted date!<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> But, the first troubles are in sight. The Delft University Doctoral Regulations (see regulations and forms on <a href="http://www.tudelft.nl/live/pagina.jsp?id=34364c3a-a983-4cd8-9261-0d1bdc294332&lang=en">http://www.tudelft.nl/live/pagina.jsp?id=34364c3a-a983-4cd8-9261-0d1bdc294332&lang=en</a> ) states a 14 week countdown period, counted backwards from the intended defense date. However, at our Publication Office they follow a 21 week countdown period. When putting these schedules side by side some issues rise.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> The biggest is the date my supervisors (promotoren) have to approve the thesis and the propositions. Delft Regulations tell me this is at least 7 weeks prior to my defense, however the Publication Office people tell me that they need the manuscript about 10 weeks prior to my defense date to “design” and print it… But once I sent out the manuscript to have it designed/printed I cannot make major changes anymore. So instead of 7 weeks prior to my defense, I need approval from my supervisors 10 weeks in advance. Yet, this is the 5th of January… meaning that everyone will be on holiday, not around or whatever.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> It’s gonna be a juggle with figures after all…<o:p></o:p> 2

Moreover, during the first week, a number of suggestions were done by the people who actually used it, and these were fixed as well. With regard to the last version, we made the following improvements; - Albums; albums can be created. Per album and image, a title and description can be added. These albums and images can be tagged, commented on, and you can see the statistics. - Documents; you are able to do all this as well with documents. - Events; you can indicate you will attend an event, and you avatar (profile picture) will be shown in a list below. Moreover, you can leave a reaction. - Tags; one of the biggest changes compared to last week are the Tags and the Tag system. Last week it did not work, now it does. You can easily filter out messages, events, and documents with tags, and you can easily add your own tags. 1

2.0 class="MsoNormal">And the story continues! Made my visit to the pedel’s office (beadle) today to plan a date for the defense. Contrary to all horror stories on agendas that are stuffed for at least six months, I had no trouble planning a date in March – the 9th . If I had wished to I could even have planned in one of the open dates in February… Seems that especially December and July are packed way ahead. So if you plan your defense in that period: be on time – but that implies having your forms signed as well.So, now it’s waiting for my supervisor to formally invite the defense committee members to the defense and ask them if the 9th of March works out for them. I already made a little inquiry myself (just to be sure) and I was told that at least everyone is in the Netherlands that month – and the one coming over from the US confirmed his presence.  Hopefully our guy from the publication office doesn’t stress out. He already expressed some worries on having my thesis printed when I told him the defense date would be by the end of March…<o:p></o:p> 5

(we can always discard it again ;-) since i was appointed as one of the ambassadors i will take my role seriously and be the good example. Don't u hesitate to give feedback to the developers of this "thing": they claim it can do more than is implemented as yet. Stimulate them and the usage as much as possible so we might be able to find out what a community like this can really brong to us Phd's.<div>As far as i have seen up to now, it looks like a far more "useable" platform than the Blackboard community the phd's of REH have been using to try and share content.</div><div>Keep up the good work!</div><div> </div> 1

1.0 PhD community has been launched, and I am glad to be responsible for guiding it into a well used and thriving PhD community. Well... how do I intend to do that? I will explain that in more detail in the following posts, but this summarizes it more or less; <ol><li>Ambassador network. I have met with a number of enthusiastic PhD's who are willing to invest a very small amount of their time to create a personal profile, make use of the main applications. Doing that will undoubtely raise some questions and issues which they want to share with me. Moreover, they will think with me and each other about the functionalities that will be build into the network the following versions until January. I will try to form a group that represents most PhD students at the university. Your help is welcome: send me an email if you're interested (or I will:)).</li><li>Scaling up. The following months you will see a number of applications that will be built in the network. You will like them, because the ambassadors, who represent you, have decided that these functionalities are really useful.</li><li>Offline events. Next to the technology, you might see some things organized, and discussed, linked to, and explained online. What exactly, remains a surprise (don't you like surprises?).</li><li>Newsletter & content. Every now and then, when I really think it is necessary, I will send you a newsletter, to make sure each member of the PhD community receives my message. Also, I will write a weblog, comment on others, answer questions, and urge other institutions, such as Marketing & Communication, Library, TU Delta, and various faculty to publish relevant news online. </li><li>Connect. Clearly, there are many different small-scale initiatives that are similar to this one on the various faculties and institutions. Rather than seeing this as a threat, I will look how this can be used to reinforce each other.</li><li>Feedback and development.
