Open Access publishing is a very effective means for scientists to disseminate their work all over the world and increase their number of citations. For all scientists who want to learn more about making their articles accessible world-wide, TU Delft Library organises a lunch lecture.

The lecture can also be viewed via the live stream on www.library.tudelft.nl/openaccesspresentation.

Lunch lecture
At the end of the international Open Access week 2009, from 19 to 23 October, TU Delft Library organises a lunch lecture. Come to the Central Library on Friday 23 October at 12:30 and listen to our Open Access expert, while enjoying a free lunch.

Publishing world-wide
Open Access (OA) articles are digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. These articles can be accessed by people all over the world, which increases the chance of an article being cited.

TU Delft Library supports Open Access
In 2008 TU Delft Library introduced the Open Access Fund TU Delft. It offers financial support to scientists in rendering their articles Open Access during the publication process a well as retrospectively.
Another option for Open Access publishing is the TU Delft Repository facilitated by TU Delft Library. The Repository not only publishes articles, but also dissertations, Master theses, and other literature written by TU Delft scientists.
OA publishing involves different copyrights than publishing an article traditionally. TU Delft Library is an expert on this subject. The Copyright Information Point devotes special attention to the subject of Open Access.

Win an OA-donation for you and your research group!
Upload an Open Access article in the TU Delft Repository between 1 November and 31 December and your name will be included in a prize draw.
The prize can be used for covering the costs of another 10 Open Access publications. For details please contact library@tudelft.nl.

On 7 & 8 October, there will be a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Open Courseware (OCW) Consortium, on which Anka Mulder, director of ESA at TU Delft, has a seat. The meeting will be followed on Friday 9 October by an Open CourseWare Seminar, which has been organised by Bureau OpenER.

If you are interested in Open CourseWare and would like to know more about the current state of play, make a note of 9 October in your diary. You will find more information about OCW on http://ocw.tudelft.nl. Details of the programme for the seminar will be available shortly.

In October 2007, TU Delft started publishing (multimedia) teaching material online, free of charge, under the name Open Courseware (OCW). The material was available on http://ocw.tudelft.nl. Thirty-two courses have now been published, including the latest additions: Stochastic Evolution Equations (EEMCS) and Transport and Water Management in Urban Areas (CEG). A separate portal currently being designed will be used to publish teaching material for secondary school pupils in order to help prospective students make the right choice of higher education.

TU Delft hopes that by making this teaching material available free of charge, and thereby increasing the transparency of education in general, it will be helping with the development of open knowledge organisations in world-wide networks and enhancing the quality of modern higher education. If you teach an interesting course which you would like to offer to a national and international public, please inform us by signing up via ocw@tudelft.nl. Bureau OpenER will help you to publish your course online.

Rector Magnificus Jacob Fokkema invites you personally to participate in this competition.
Check the invitation of Rector Magnificus Jacob Fokkema.

The Delft Design & Engineering Award rewards the best design of TU Delft with a validation bonus of €25,000. The second and third prizes are respectively €15,000 and €7,500. All the scientists (including PhDs) associated with TU Delft may participate in this competition by submitting a design – by 14 August 2009 – to the Valorisation Centre. This competition is intended for scientists; students are excluded from participating. A design may vary from a product, process, system or part of these. The application form and terms and conditions are available at: www.tudelft.nl/ddea

All the submitted designs will be judged by a committee of experts from the Design Platform. This committee will decide which scientists will go forward to the semi-final, which will take place on 5 November 2009, during the Design Seminar ‘Use my brain’, when the candidates will present their design to an expert jury consisting of representatives from industry and government, and appointed by all the faculties. This jury will select the scientists who will compete later that day for the title of ‘Best TU Delft Design 2009’ and will decide the final winner.

The Delft Design & Engineering Award is one of the projects started by the Executive Board to highlight the design and engineering disciplines. Design and engineering are of crucial importance to TU Delft and form the link between pure science and the most significant innovations. The design and engineering disciplines increase the innovative capacity of TU Delft and with that of the Netherlands as a whole.

The Delft Design & Engineering Award is organised by the TU Delft Valorisation Centre and YES!Delft. To enter the competition, see the information at http://www.tudelft.nl/ddea or put your questions via ddea@tudelft.nl.

For scientific researchers, we offer training sessions to help them learn how to gain recognition for their studies. Transparency, openness, dialogue, stakeholder networks, seeking common ground are all options perfectly suited to a university firmly planted within the wider community. Communication is more important than ever before in modern research efforts.

The veteran scientific communications advisors at TU Delft, with the cooperation of the Institute for Technology and Communication (TPM), the Science Education & Communication section (AS) and the Career Development Centre have compiled a course packet focusing on popularising, forming opinions and presenting one’s research findings to all sorts of target groups, including the media. Our excellent research and educational programme distinguishes us from other universities domestically and abroad. Often, however, we cannot display this excellence in a sufficiently clear and effective manner.

The Global Forum's vision is of a world in which the potential of research and innovation is fully utilized to address the health problems of the poor. Innovation is defined as the creation, development and implementation of a new product, process or service, with the aim of improving efficiency, effectiveness or competitive advantage. Research for health therefore goes far beyond medicine and biology, to include sectors such as economics, environment, politics, sociology and others. Innovating for the health of all involves both social and technological innovation.

Within the broad range of the theme, essays are invited from young professionals working in or interested in the wide spectrum of research for health and health equity.
Read more about this competition

Within the TU Delft organization there is an urgent need for of a generic information system on the progress of phd's. A variety of local systems already exists but these are not compatible (different source-data) or used properly. For the TU Delft this is important because of the need for univocal management information. For departments and faculties this supports adequate supervision. For the PhD it is of use because it helps in the project planning of their phd and the communication on this with the promoter/supervisor. Finally it also supports the office of the beadle with the capacity planning of the defenses.

For more information about the TU Delft Doctorate Progress Monitoring System, you can contact:

Ingrid Emmerik (I.M.J.M.Emmerik@tudelft.nl)
Jordi Kerkum - 3ME (J.P.Kerkum@tudelft.nl)
Dian Verbunt (D.W.A.M.Verbunt@tudelft.nl)

The review covered all research conducted at the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE) at TU Delft from 2001 to 2006.

The review committee gave the faculty overall ratings for academic quality, productivity, relevance and viability that are well above average in comparison to similar international institutes.

Average rated 'very good'
On average, research at the Faculty of 3mE received a rating of ‘very good’. All faculty departments contributed to this high rating. This high rating is all the more remarkable because this was the first assessment review for most research group leaders.

Top rated 'excellent'
Four programmes (representing 30% of 3mE’s research capacity) received the top rating of ‘excellent’. These programme are Biomechatronics & Biorobotics, Systems & Control, Aero & Hydromechanics, and Microstructural Control in Metals. The review committee also identified potential for improvement and made a number of valuable comments and suggestions.

Very proud
The Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE) is very proud of the review committee’s assessment. The results may be seen as a seal of approval for the faculty’s strategic and tactical strategy since the six research departments were established and the overall research programme was restructured in 2004.

The Faculty of 3mE comprises 6 research departments. Senior academic staff account for 118 FTE. Senior staff members are responsible for supervising PhD candidates (232 FTE, a 78% increase since 2001) and providing education to 2,335 Bachelor’s and Master’s students (an increase of 33% since 2001). The faculty’s commitment to education, together with M€14.2 in external research funding (an increase of 54% since 2001) are evidence of the faculty’s dynamism and capacity for innovation, confirming its relevance for our economy and society.

Contact
Should you require any further information please contact
IJsbrand Haagsma
T. +31 (0) 15 2781962

We will cover academic as well as cultural topics, and there will also be the opportunity to socialise over a drink and a snack.

The upcoming talk is on the topic "Vermeer's legacy to Delft" given by Mr.Koos de Wilt. Koos de Wilt studied law and history of art. He has worked in law and publicity, and having founded several publishing companies and having written a number of books, he now makes films and publishes in newspapers and periodicals. He is currently the director of the Vermeer Centre in Delft.

Date: Wednesday, 17 December 2008
Time: 17:30 Hrs
Venue: Cultural Centre, Mekelweg 10, Delft Entrance fee: Free

Johannes Vermeer is one of the best known artists from the Dutch Golden Age. His name is inextricably linked with Delft, the city in which he was born in 1632 and where he lived and worked all his life. His paintings found their way all over the world; only seven of his works still remain in Dutch museums.

Famed for his mastery of light, there is more to Vermeer than meets the eye. As a true Delftenaar he made full use of the technology available to him in the form of the camera obscura or so called 'goggle box'. Fellow Delftenaar Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was a friend of Vermeer's and had a very large influence on him through his knowledge on lenses and their use in this technique.

Through the eyes of Vermeer we see an interesting and beautiful picture of the life and history of the city in which we live and study, and follow in his footsteps when we use technology in our study of the world around us.

[PROMOOD & SG, Delft]

___________________________________________________________________

2.

13 May 2008, the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Delft was reduced to ashes. The Dutch architectural community was in a shock. Nevertheless, this community soon joined forces to set to work again. After all, the loss of the faculty building also offers new opportunities. That is why the Faculty decided to organize an international open ideas competition.

The entrants are asked to formulate, both in text and images, a vision on the two competition themes: new concepts and dynamics of city and campus. This vision should be presented in a sketch design for a new Bouwkunde on the existing site, or on a well-argued, alternative site.

More information can be found here...

The issue is clear for Rector Magnificus Jacob Fokkema: TU Delft must create a community that allows both Dutch and international students to discuss issues that matter most to them. Without such a community, the university can never truly become international. Rector Fokkema, students and university communication officers gathered to discuss how such a community should be built.
