The Stichting Betabanenmarkt is imposed with the task to organise the annual Science Career Event. Although the name implies a job fair, the Science Career Event is more than that! Aimed at 3rd year Bachelor students, Master Students, Ph'd students and postdocs from the Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University, we organise a day where they can get an idea of what employers have to offer and this way we try to narrow the gap between university life and the working world. Gruis UHD-Bk Since the Dutch social housing sector gained more financial independence from the government in the 1980s and 1990s, it has become more important for social landlords to establish policies concerning the future development of their housing stock. This has raised the interest in policy development and in systematic methods to turn policy principles into action in terms of investment choices regarding estates, buildings and individual homes, such as refurbishment, sale, demolition or ‘simply’ regular maintenance. Many of these methods are based on normative models from strategic business planning, which assume a steering of decisions at the operational level by central policies at the strategic level. This assumption, however, can be questioned on the basis of planning theories from other disciplines, e.g. spatial planning, which indicate that many policies, especially top-down policies, are only partially or even not carried out. This dissertation concentrates on the extent to which the portfolio policies of Dutch social landlords is reflected in their investment choices and on the role of above-mentioned systematic methods in this. Fieldwork focused on several social landlords, regarded as the front-runners in the sector for policy development. On the basis of this fieldwork the dissertation shows some important shortcomings of the current models for strategic business planning and suggests improvements for these inadequacies.

Optim., 16(4):1110--1136 (electronic), 2006] Roos proposed a full-Newton step Infeasible Interior-Point Method (IIPM) for Linear Optimization (LO). It is a primal-dual homotopy method; it differs from the classical IIPMs in that it uses only full steps. This means that no line searches are needed. In this thesis, we first present an improved full-Newton step IIPM for LO. Then, based on the properties of Euclidean Jordan algebras, we generalize the improved full-Newton step IIPM for LO to full Nesterov-Todd step (NT-step) IIPM for Symmetric Optimization (SO). Since the analysis requires a quadratic convergence result for the feasible case, primal-dual feasible IPMs with full steps are presented as well. Although our devised IIPMs admit the best known iteration bound, from a practical perspective they are not efficient. This is because they always perform according to their worst-case theoretical complexity bounds, which means that only tiny reductions of the so-called barrier parameter are admitted. As a remedy, we propose a more aggressive (adaptive) updating strategy. Finally, our full NT-step IIPM for SO is implemented with both standard and adaptive updates of the barrier parameter. The significant improvement in performance of the adaptive updating strategy over the original short updating strategy is illustrated. The algorithm with adaptive updates is also used to solve problems from the well known library SDPLIB [Optim. Methods Softw., 11/12(1-4):683--690, 1999] of test problems. The results are promising, and to some extend competing with SDPT3 [Math. Program., 95(2, Ser. B):189--217, 2003]. More information? Sloof UHD-3mE To ensure a continuing miniaturization in the semiconductor industry, new technologies need to be developed to define ever smaller patterns on the silicon substrates. One of these emerging technologies is extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. Unfortunately, EUV light causes oxidation of the optical components inside the lithography machine that are needed to focus the light beam. The effect of oxidation can be mitigated by providing the optics with a protective coating. The transition metal ruthenium was chosen as candidate material for such a coating for its optical properties in the EUV domain. As metallic ruthenium is not widely used, knowledge about the oxidation of ruthenium is fragmented. In this dissertation, the oxidation behaviour of ruthenium and the influence of EUV light on the oxidation are studied. To this end, single crystals of ruthenium were exposed to oxygen at various temperatures and oxygen partial pressures in a vacuum environment and analysed with a variety of surface analytical techniques. To gain insight in the processes occurring inside the oxide layer, a kinetic simulation model needed to be developed based on the hopping transport of particles through an oxide layer on a metal surface. This simulation model was verified with experimental results obtained from aluminium, since the oxidation of aluminium is well-understood, and then applied to the oxidation of ruthenium. The combined results of experimental and simulation analysis lead to an understanding of the oxidation behaviour of ruthenium and the role of EUV light on oxidation behaviour. More information? Although for many fields there are guidelines about authorship and co-authorship and which positions are assigned to whom, it is often the case that lists of authors are not discussed, but imposed upon. Departmental and other politics often affects who gets to put his or her name on which article and authorship seems to be more to do with maintaining territorial rights, colonialisation and empire building. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> So who is an author of a paper? What does it involve to be an author? Ad Lagendijk, in his Survival Guide for Scientists (Amsterdam University Press, 2009), notes the following (p.59):<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Each and every author of a paper should understand the basics of that paper. Each and every author should be able to give a presentation on the content of that paper. With an increasing number of multidisciplinary papers this moral standard becomes more and more difficult to uphold. <o:p></o:p> A real moral problem is the specialist who has something that is indispensable for your research - a sample for instance. The specialist understands nothing of your work, but he requests to be co-author on all the papers where you publish results obtained with his sample. <o:p></o:p> A good compromise is to put him on the first paper - sandwiched between a number of other co-authors - and leave him out on all future papers. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Which brings to light the importance of the position in the list of authors as well. Graafland Bk This work is an investigation into Shanghai’s role in the twenty-first century as it attempts to rejoin the global city network. It also examines the effects this move is having on the city, its people, and its public spaces. Shanghai’s intention to turn itself into the New York of Asia is not succeeding, in fact the city might be better trying to become the Chicago of Asia instead. As one of Saskia Sassen’s ‘global cities’ Shanghai functions as part of a network that requires face-to-face contact, but it has also been able to benefit from links that were forged during the colonial era (1842 to c.1949). In fact, the new global elites who have made cities like Shanghai their home have ended up living much like former ones; with the result that their needs are pushing out the very people who used to call this city ‘home’. These are the people who inhabit what Manuel Castells calls the ‘Fourth World’ (what this research refers to as the ‘analogue archipelago’). Manuel Castells’s notion of the ‘network society’ also shows how recent developments in globalisation have resulted in qualitative social and economic changes because they operate in real time. Globalisation, however, does not necessarily mean Westernisation. In fact, there is a strong neo-Confucian ethos underpinning China’s recent resurgence, which in turn has important ramifications for how Chinese people perceive public space. Shanghai’s new public space is curiously dead – and while Asians tend to blur distinctions between public and private more than we do in the West (which can render these spaces harder to read for Westerners) – the fault lies more with the fact that some of Shanghai’s new public spaces are simply ‘left-over’ spaces, particularly in front of the newer skyscrapers. This space has been designed for movement, not for use, and it contrasts starkly with the traditional alleyway houses of the colonial-era city where communal activity, graduated privacy, and organised complexity made for a rich and dynamic street life. Part II of this thesis deals with colonialism, noting how Shanghai has benefitted from its justly famous colonial history in its attempts to rejoin the global city network. Colonialism is carefully differentiated from imperialism, although it is noted that both were premised on industrial innovations, particularly Britain’s, in the nineteenth century. Part II also examines Hong Kong’s and Singapore’s role in the global city network, the better to understand Shanghai; and a useful comparison has been made between Shanghai’s alleyway houses and the Singapore shophouse with regard to public space and the possibilities for rehabilitation and reuse. Part III is perhaps the most important section of this thesis, particularly its use of Michel Foucault’s theories of space and power relations and how these are inscribed in a built environment. This Part also highlights the use that has been made of Foucault’s work by other academics, notably Edward W. Said in Orientalism. Said saw some good things as having resulted from Western hegemony over that part of the world he defines as the Orient but generally tends to regard imperialistic influence as debilitating and dangerous. Use has also been made of some critics of Said’s work, notably Robert Irwin and Ibn Warraq, who maintain that Said overvalued the role of the intellectual, and, more dangerously, misunderstood the Foucauldian notion of discourse, which is what led him to make some of his most damaging statements about European racism against the Orient. By way of contrast, David Grahame Shane’s application of the Foucauldian notion of the heterotopia – to Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City – is an apposite and accurate use of one of Foucault’s theories. Part IV examines China’s rich and ancient culture, noting as it does so that cultures are constructed, and, more importantly, asking how they are constructed. Manuel Castells sees the construction of identities as using materials from history, geography, biology, productive and reproductive institutions, as well as from collective memory and personal fantasies, and even from power apparatuses and religious revelation; this thesis’s examination of the Chinese mentalité is an important exercise in helping to comprehend what is happening in Shanghai today. Cities are not about buildings and streets; cities are about people, and their networks of interaction. Any study of a city must take account of the warm life of its inhabitants and not allow itself to be blinded by the cold geometries of stone. This examination of what has gone wrong with Shanghai’s new public spaces was greatly aided by an understanding of the Chinese language itself, which in turn led to the conclusion that the Western term ‘public’ might be better transliterated into Chinese as chang (which means ‘open-air’) rather than the more usual gong (or ‘public’), especially when describing Shanghai’s new public space.

Kreutzer TNW     coprom. | Dr.ir. M. Makkee UHD-TNW Most chemical production processes in industry make use of catalysts. A catalyst optimises a chemical process without being consumed. Knowledge about kinetics (rate) of a chemical reaction is needed to make a production process more efficient. Research on kinetics of a reaction between for instance gas and liquid reactants aided by a solid catalyst are usually performed in an autoclave (a closed vessel) about the size a milk carton. By making smaller versions of these research reactors there are, in addition to practical, also fundamental (chemical) engineering advantages. A practical example is that one set-up can contain several reactors more easily. As such, multiple experiments may be performed at the same time. By additionally choosing for a continuous system (continued supply and removal of reactants and products) the research possibilities are further extended. This dissertation describes the design and operation of a multiple-parallel reactor system with continuous gas and liquid flows for kinetic measurements. Each reactor is about as large as a straw, and is filled with catalyst powder. The intended reactions are hydrogenations with which fuels are made more environmentally friendly. The results show that this newly designed set-up is capable of measuring intrinsic reaction kinetics. With that, a series of measurements on removing polluting components (aromatics, sulphur) from fuel is made possible, as demonstrated.

Bruining CiTG The results of this thesis give insight into the (mass)-transfer during flow of gases, especially CO2, in various gas-liquid systems. A number of experiments was performed to investigate the transport phenomena through interfaces with and without surfactant monolayers. The observed phenomena have been incorporated into physical models to predict the fate of CO2 overlaying a bulk liquid or liquid saturated porous media. Moreover, dynamics of (CO2)-foam flow in oil-free and oil-saturated porous media was studied using X-ray tomography. The results of this thesis have the following implications for CO2 storage and CO2 EOR. • Natural convection effects are favorable for recovery of hydrocarbons because the mixing zone between CO2 gas and the oil becomes longer, which improves the vertical sweep efficiency and the Buckley-Leverett displacement efficiency. • Permeation of gas through foam films is a strong function of salinity of the water and plays an important role in the efficiency of foam application in Petroleum Engineering. • Nature of the injected gas plays an important role in the efficiency of foam displacement. • Foaming of CO2 above its critical point does not affect the oil recovery. • Foaming of CO2 can improve the oil recovery by improving the CO2 utilization efficiency, i.e., by reducing the gas mobility in the high permeable zones of the reservoir and diverting it into regions with higher oil saturation.

One thing that Einstein's theory of general relativity has brought to the fore is the fact that empty space (or, more precisely, spacetime) is in itself a wonderfully rich and interesting entity for theoretical physicists and science fiction authors alike. Although it severely stretches our human imagination, astrophysical observations leave little doubt that spacetime can bend, curve, vibrate and move. Bringing also quantum theory into the game seems to lead to even more bizarre possibilities such as spacetime foam and wormholes - or does it? What is most fascinating about all this is the fact that at least some of these questions are within the reach of our fundamental physical theories, not just qualitatively, but also quantitatively. M.J.L. van Tooren LR Use of the elastic axis to decouple the bending and torsion in vibration analysis does not work for fiber composite structures. Anisotropic material properties often result in an elastic axis that is either discontinuous or far outside the real aircraft. Existing mathematical models of flexible aircraft dynamics do not address this issue. In this thesis, state of-the-art inertially coupled equations of motion of a flexible aircraft are modified. For each of the equivalent beam models of the fuselage, wings, and tail structure a particular fixed axis is used as a reference of vibrations instead of using an elastic axis. Because no decoupling can be used, the beam deflections become a function of both bending and twist. The resulting displacements are expanded to the expressions of beam generalized velocities. This development also modifies the expressions of kinetic and strain energies and subsequent global mass and stiffness matrices, statespace coefficient matrices, and, finally, the structural loads equations. The effects of coupled vibrations on the aircraft dynamic response are simulated by manipulating the elastic axis of each wing and horizontal tail in five different cases of both steady and dynamic flight conditions. Results indicate that bending-torsion coupled vibrations significantly affect the aircraft response and thereby the structural loads. More information? Niemegeers EWI Spectrum for the masses Due to the rapid growth of wireless services the radio spectrum needs to be efficiently utilized to fulfill the quality of service requirements of the end users. However, many independent observations show that radio frequency resources are often wasted. That is, while channels where WiFi and Bluetooth operate are crowded, other radio frequencies, like those assigned to analogue cellular telephony or TV bands stay silent. Our own limited observations of Dutch 400MHz channel occupancy indicate less than 10% spectrum utilization. Thus if secondary wireless networks were able to exploit those voids in radio spectrum, its overall utilization would dramatically increase and the pace of wireless networks proliferation would be kept. Therefore this idea, called Opportunistic Spectrum Access (OSA), has attracted lots of recent attention of numerous research labs and universities. This thesis describes how communication using OSA principles is possible. More information? Nearly forty years ago, Dos and Bertie Winkel embarked on a series of impressive travels which they hope to continue for years to come. The two photographers developed their individual styles, Dos becoming an authority on underwater photography and Bertie specialising in portrait photography of the non-Western man. They have undertaken over a hundred trips to Africa, as well as dozens of journeys to other parts of the world. They are in a hurry, as these ancient cultures are vanishing rapidly. Many of the cultures that they have visited in Africa are now virtually extinct. Only the very oldest members of the Baoulé, Senufo, Bambara, Bobo, Mossi and Lobi in Africa still practice their ancient rites and rituals. The younger generations wear Western clothes, own a bicycle or motorised vehicle and watch television. Bertie and Dos feel immensely privileged to be able to capture our rapidly changing world in photographs. Coral reefs disappear faster than the rainforest, and it is only a matter of time before the last isolated Indians in the dwindling rainforest will be be "discovered", heralding the end of their thousands of years of remote culture. Bertie and Dos hope to gain attention for the impact of these disturbing developments and aim to share and preserve the beauty of the non-western man for future generations. Rots Bk/CiTG <DIV class=left id=contentText> Various examples of structural building damage caused by building activities in the nearby surroundings have been front page news in the last years. The design of an urban building project requires a risc analysis on the effects of vibrations and settlements on the surrounding structures. This analysis should be carried out by experts on the field of geotechnical and structural engineering. The requirements imposed by the surroundings and various parties like building owners or service companies restrict the design of the adjacent construction works. The assessment of the influence of the construction works on the immediate surroundings is a major political, technical and financial challenge in the design of projects in urban areas. Prediction of ground deformations due to excavations works and consequently the determination of potential building damage of the adjacent structures forms therefore an important part of settlement risk management for underground works in urban surroundings. Reliable prediction methods for ground movements associated with the excavation works and calculation methods for the prediction of the resulting building damage are required as a crucial engineering tool for the quantification of damage risks in an early design stage. These design considerations in combination with monitoring should be used during construction of the excavation works to control the influence on the surroundings and consequently minimize the impact on the adjacent buildings. A proactive risk control strategy has to be followed in the construction stage in order to be able to apply mitigating measures in time, preventing damage to develop. The current regulation in the Netherlands does not sufficiently cover the requirements on risc analyses to avoid building damage on surrounding buildings. This thesis presents the recent developments of prediction methods, which can either be used by a specialist engineer in the design stage to carry out a risc analysis, or be applied for a postdiction to analyse relations between excavation works and claimed building damage. Many of TU Delft's PhD research projects are financially supported by the Dutch Technology Foundation, STW. According to the STW rules, only risky scientific research projects are supported. In addition to the risk that no answers can be found for scientific questions or that the questions were wrong, there are also risks in the social and personal sphere. Usually, PhD researchers are working with a high level of motivation and they always have a lot of interesting new ideas and knowledge to report. But what to do when industrial partners lose interest? What to do when the PhD researcher has a conflict with his/her supervisor? What to do when there are personal problems? In order to become less vulnerable to such effects, we need better risk management to be performed by everybody being involved. Risk management is complex, but you are not alone: there is a shared responsibility! The two PhD mentors of the EEMCS faculty, prof. Gerard Meijer and prof. Catholijn Jonker, will present their ideas about this and discuss and illustrate this with a number of case studies. because they provide a deeper understanding of failure mechanisms and occurrence probabilities than deterministic techniques. In addition, they draw our attention to the consequences of failure at an early stage in the design process. However, to achieve these advantages, a well-defined model of the structure together with a robust reliability technique is needed. On the other hand, complex engineering problems with complicated boundary conditions usually are analysed with the finite element technique. The finite element method provides an implicit approximation to the limit state equation (LSE) that is far more accurate than other approaches.  Therefore, if one wants to have the full advantage of the probabilistic approach one needs both an advanced model and a supporting reliability technique. For the reliability analysis of engineering structures a variety of methods is known, of which Monte Carlo simulation is widely considered to be among the most robust and most generally applicable. The absence of systematic errors and the fact that its error analysis is well-understood are properties that many competing methods lack. A drawback is the often large number of runs needed, particularly in complex models, where each run may entail a finite element analysis or other time consuming procedure. Variance reduction methods may be applied to reduce simulation cost. This study describes methods to reduce the simulation cost even further, while retaining the accuracy of Monte Carlo, by taking into account widely-present monotonicity in limit state equations or other prior information. This dissertation focuses on problems where a highly accurate estimate of the failure probability is required, but an explicit expression for the limit state equation is unavailable and the limit state equation can only be evaluated without loss of accuracy via finite element analysis or some other time consuming process.01 April 2009 | 12:30 o'clock location: Aula TU Delft Mr. M. Urbach TNW Diffraction gratings are being used to manipulate light in many different applications, such as in flat panel display systems, modern lighting systems, and optical recording. Diffraction gratings can be made polarization selective due to form birefringence. An alternative approach to polarization selective gratings is to use birefringent materials. In this thesis, diffraction gratings consisting of at least one birefringent material are investigated. The optical properties of an anisotropic medium follow from its dielectric permittivity tensor. Compared to isotropic media whose dielectric permittivity reduces to a scalar, the permittivity tensor of an anisotropic material on some basis is in general a full 3×3 matrix. In most standard textbooks, the treatment of anisotropic materials is restricted to those with symmetric real permittivity tensor. However, in some media, the permittivity tensor is complex hermitian. Cholesteric liquid crystals are examples of such media. In this thesis, we develop a rigorous study of light propagation in anisotropic media with a complex hermitian dielectric permittivity tensor of which the real symmetric tensor is only a special case. In Chapter 2 we study Maxwell's equations for time-harmonic monochromatic plane waves in anisotropic media. We extend the classical theory of a real symmetric permittivity tensor to that of a complex hermitian tensor. In a medium with an hermitian type of permittivity tensor, the eigenstates of the electric field vector are elliptically polarized with opposite directions of rotation. In Chapter 3, gratings consisting of liquid crystal molecules oriented parallel to the grating grooves are studied for application as polarizing color separator in liquid crystal displays. In Chapter 4, we characterize the diffraction efficiencies of so-called POLICRYPS (acronym for Polymer Liquid Crystal Polymer Slices) gratings. A diffraction efficiency of more than 95% can be achieved by limiting the incident angles to the cone defined by the Bragg condition. In Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 photoanisotropic polarization gratings are studied extensively. Photoanisotropic polarization gratings can be manufactured with polarization holographic recording. Two interfering beams are used to make a periodic interference pattern which is then translated into a periodically modulated permittivity tensor, which is complex hermitian in general, using the photoanisotropic material.

G.A.M. van Kuik LR For wind turbine design, it would be ideal to have 50 year (or longer) of wind measurements available for the intended site of installation. In case computer power is also unlimited, the loads which a wind turbine encounters during its lifetime can be straightforward calculated by means of a wind turbine design package. In practice this is not the case. Present wind turbine standards specify a single, rather stylistic wind gust. An alternative approach would be to focus on just those gusts that are significant. By such an approach still an equivalent of 50 year of wind can be considered. By means of (normal) stochastic simulation wind time series can be generated which resembles turbulence. This is presently a standard feature of design tools. So-called constrained stochastic simulation is a special kind of stochastic simulation. Herewith the required gusts can be generated which satisfies some given condition (constraint). For example wind gusts with a certain velocity jump. The specific gust shape which governs the design of wind turbines is analytically determined. For pitch regulated wind turbines it happens to be wind gusts with a velocity dip.

For over one and a half centuries now, Edgar Allan Poe’s horror stories have mesmerized their readers, unsettled them, and sometimes chilled them to the bone. Although in many ways of their own time and place – for example with regard to the pseudo-sciences they so often invoke or the magazine audiences they cater to – Poe’s tales somehow manage to keep attracting us while other, similar texts of his time do not. What, then, is the secret of their success? This question is not easy to answer. As in the case of all literary classics, their lasting popularity may to some extent depend on text-external factors – authorial branding for instance, a combination of social and cultural trends, even historical accident. Touching only briefly on these factors, however, in this lecture we will mainly be looking at the seemingly immortal qualities that can be found in the tales themselves. With special focus on ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ and ‘The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar,’ we will unearth some of the themes and narrative techniques that are widely held to lie at the root of Poe’s success – of his success, that is, at pleasurably frightening us with his mysteries of the macabre. Dr. Rudolph Glitz is lecturer in English Literature en Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Amsterdam.

2.0 On the print Picture Exhibition by the brilliant Dutch artist M.C. Escher, a young man can be seen studying a picture in a gallery in Malta, where, paradoxically, he himself is depicted looking at the picture. Much is known about the methods that Escher used to manufacture the print. Less known is the fact that the print contains a so-called Droste effect, an infinite repetition in visual art. This becomes apparent when analyzing Escher's drafts mathematically. However, in the centre of the picture we find a blank spot that even the artist himself was not able to fill. Using advanced mathematical methods, the puzzle has now been solved! A stunning lecture with an exciting conclusion. After the lecture the exhibition "Escher - Imagining Infinity" can be viewed with a drink and a snack. This lecture is organised in collaboration with the International Office of Delft University. Dr. Bart de Smit works at the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University.

Most electricity is produced from fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas. The disadvantages are that their supply is finite and unevenly distributed across the earth. Conventional power stations also emit greenhouse gases. Therefore, sustainable alternatives must be developed, such as wind power. The disadvantages of wind are that it may or may not blow and that it is unpredictable. The generation of electricity must however always equal the demand. This makes the integration of wind power in the electricity system more difficult. This Ph.D.-thesis investigates the integration of wind power into the existing power system. Simulation models are developed and used to explore the operation of power systems with a lot of wind power. The simulations provide a picture of the reliability, cost and emission of CO2 of the generation of electricity, with and without wind power. The research also takes into account electricity exchange on international markets. Possible solutions for integrating wind power, such as flexible power plants and energy storage, are investigated as well. It turns out that the integration of large-scale (12 GW) wind power is technically possible in the Dutch power system. There are however limits to the integration of wind power during moments of low-load, for example because existing power plants cannot be turned off just like that. Key solutions for this lies in the international trade of electricity and in making existing power plants more flexible. 2.0 The design, planning and building of new infrastructures can be considered as ill-structured problems in complex systems.  Policy makers face several dilemmas in the planning process and need the support of methods and tools. One of the tools is gaming. Almost everyone is familiar with games for entertainment purposes, like board games, card games or computer games. A growing number of people, however, are becoming aware of serious purposes of games. In short, serious games are games which use the knowledge from the entertainment computer games for education, training, health and public policy. The main research question is to what extend can serious games simulate complex infrastructure systems and how can these serious games be used for understanding complex infrastructure systems?  One of the games developed within this research is SimPort-MV2, a game centered on the development of the Second Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam. This game allows people to play with various strategies and see what the effect is in thirty years – without having to wait all that long, and without the huge economic risks. The main goal of the game is to get a better understanding of the long term consequences of strategic decisions and to improve the communication between interdisciplinary teams.

As a true Delftenaar he made full use of the technology available to him in the form of the camera obscura or so called 'goggle box'. 2.0 Prof. Pieter Kruit and Ir. Bert Jan Kamperbeek will tell the incredible story about how they started MAPPER Lithography with the ambition and arrogance to change the way in which semiconductor devices (computer chips, memories, mobile phones) are produced. MAPPER develops a revolutionary electron beam lithography machine, a product that sells for many million Euros a piece. The story is about the ups and downs that led to the present situation where MAPPER employs 160 people in their premises at Delft Techpark. The most recent milestone is the order of a prototype machine by TSMC, the largest IC foundary in the world. The presentation will give ample opportunity to learn and exchange ideas about the necessary conditions for starting a company. *** In collaboration with Studium Generale, Promood organizes a monthly series of lectures and debates primarily intended for MA-students and PHD-candidates. We will cover academic as well as cultural topics, and there will also be the opportunity to socialise over a drink and a snack. All lectures and debates are in English.

1.67 Salami science: cut up your research results up in as many thin slices as possible and publish one slice in this journal, the next slice in another and so on. Is this acceptable from the perspective of scientific integrity? The workshop will address on the one hand the responsibility of individual researchers — using some concrete cases. On the other hand, we will discuss the publish-or-perish culture and how the system of science itself might be altered to better reflect our academic values. The workshop will be led by David Koepsell, an author, philosopher, and attorney whose recent research focuses on the nexus of science, technology, ethics and public policy; he now works at TU Delft. It will be a lunch workshop from 12.00 – 14.00 hours. A free lunch will be provided. If you would like to participate, please send an e-mail to register: e.t.oosterlaken@tudelft.nl . All participants will be informed about the location of the workshop after registration. Also, participants will receive some reading material to prepare themselves (just a few short articles). !! This workshop is full - we have plans to repeat the workshop in Spring next year.
